The third USS Aylwin, DD 355, subject of a particularly complete and well-written article in the Dictionary of American Naval Fighting Ships (DANFS), was, with Dewey, one of two Farragut-class ships to survive 1944’s Typhoon Cobra, in which Hull and Monaghan were lost.

John Cushing Aylwin was born ca. 1780 at Boston.    He served in the Royal Navy before being appointed lieutenant in the US Navy.    As sailing master of Constitution, he died 29 December 1812 of wounds received in the engagement with HMS Java.

   Aylwin was built at Philadelphia Navy Yard and commissioned 1 March 1935. Her shakedown cruise took her to six European countries ending in July in Belgium, where she received King Leopold III and Queen Astrid.
   Returning to Philadelphia via Dover, UK, she completed shakedown on 1 October. (continued)
