John Baptiste Bernadou was born in Philadelphia in 1858 and was graduated from the Naval Academy in 1880.
   He was promoted ten numbers for gallantry in action while commanding USS Winslow, torpedo boat No. 5, which was damaged in action at Cardenas, Cuba, 11 May 1898, during the Spanish-American War.
   Commander Bernadou died in New York in 1908.
