LCdr. Godfrey de Courcelles Chevalier, Naval Aviator No. 7, makes the first landing on the deck of the US Navy’s first aircraft carrier, USS Langley, CV 1, 26 October 1922. Allthough his Aeromarine 39-B turned nose downward, smashing the propeller, it did not turn over completely and he emerged unscathed.
Chevalier died less than three weeks later from injuries he received in an airplane crash.
