Above: Nicholas and O’Bannon, the first two Fletchers, both launched at Bath Iron Works, 19 February 1942—here, later in World War II.

USS Chevalier, DD 451USS Strong, DD 467Right top: Chevalier, the fourth Fletcher completed (third built at Bath), showing high after gun tub it shared with Nicholas and O’Bannon as built. Bath Iron Works’ first three Fletchers initially mounted a 1.1-inch anti-aircraft gun in this location, but it tended to overheat and was later replaced by a 40mm twin Bofors.

Bottom: Strong, built side-by-side with Chevalier, was the first Bath ship completed with a lowered gun tub, in which a 40mm twin Bofors was mounted from the beginning. She and the thirteen subsequent high-bridge Bath ships also mounted a second 40mm twin Bofors with director on the fantail, but this proved too wet.

USS Fletcher, DD 445USS Radford, DD 446Right top: Fletcher, the first ship of the class completed at Federal, Kearny, NJ, with a high gun tub like Nicholas, O’Bannon and Chevalier, but mounting a 40mm twin Bofors from the beginning.
   Bottom:
Radford, built alongside Fletcher, showing the same arrangement as Strong, November 1942.
