Edited by Destroyer History Foundation from NARA photo 19-N-5404, courtesy Ralph Corley collection, USS Porter The fourth USS Porter, DD 800, was built at Todd Pacific Shipyards, Inc., Seattle, Washington, and first commissioned on 24 June 1944. Like the three previous Porters, she was named in honor of Commodore David Porter and his son Admiral David Dixon Porter. After shakedown on the west coast, Porter operated with DesDiv 114 from Adak, Alaska in offensive sweeps against Japanese-held islands and engaging in battle with enemy ships until June 1945. In Portland, Oregon for overhaul when hostilities ceased, she resumed routine naval duties until 3 July 1946, when she was placed in an inactive status at Charleston Naval Shipyard. Recommissioned in 1951, Porter operated from Norfolk, Virginia, with DesDiv 262. In May 1952 she began a ‘round the world’ cruise. |
