Fubuki-class destroyer IJN Amagiri (“Misty Rain”). On 6 July 1943, while Nicholas and Radford were rescuing survivors of the torpedoed light cruiser Helena following the Battle of Kula Gulf, Amagiri approached with the intent of rescuing survivors of destroyer Niizuki a few miles away. Nicholas and Radford suspended rescue operations and engagedpart of the action for which they were each awarded a Presidential Unit Citation.
    
Amagiri was also the ship that, on August 2, rammed and sank Lt. John F. Kennedy’s PT 109 and one of two destroyers to escape destruction by Capt. Arleigh Burke’s DesRon 23 during the Battle of Cape St. George, 25 November 1943. She was lost after striking a mine in the Makassar Strait, 23 April 1944.
