Five DesRon 12 destroyers make formation "S-turns" in Ironbottom Sound, off Guadalcanal. From upper left: Lansdowne, Lardner, Woodworth, Buchanan and flagship Farenholt. They are returning from one of their raids on Rabaul in February 1944, and executing high-speed turns as a salute to the ships of the squadron and DesDiv 22 (Monssen, Laffey, Aaron Ward, Duncan and Barton) that had been sunk in the vicinity—a custom whenever DesRon 12 ships passed Savo Island after a successful raid against the Japanese. Commanded by Captain Rodger W. Simpson, the squadron raided Rabaul on 17–18 and Kavieng on 23–25 February 1944.
