Positions to scale of Meredith and Vireo when Meredith was attacked and sunk by planes from carrier Zuikaku, 15 October 1942, and of Vireo when she was recovered three days later. Dotted tracks are reconstructed from positions indicated the CNO’s action report as neither ship’s log survived and other reports and first person accounts do not reconcile regarding: (1) closest approach to Guadalcanal which, it appears, could not have been 75 miles as reported in one account and (2) various courses and speeds in the hours before Meredith was sunk.
