USS Monocacy at Shanghai, 1898. Oscar Walter Farenholt was born 2 May 1843 at San Antonio, Texas and enlisted in the Navy as a seaman 24 April 1861. Distinguished service led to his appointment as acting ensign in 1864 and command of mortar schooner Henry Janes in the North Carolina sounds. During the Spanish-American War, he commanded Monocacy (above) at Shanghai supporting Adm. Dewey’s fleet. Promoted rear admiral, he retired 1 September 1901 and died 30 June 1920 at Mare Island.
