In 1945, ships returning stateside for modification received an “emergency kamikaze refit.” All torpedo tubes were removed.
Two 40mm quads were mounted forward of the No. 3 5-inch gun, replacing the 40mm twins previously fitted in this location. Two 40mm twins were also mounted in port and starboard gun tubs between the stacks, replacing the forward torpedo tubes.
