USS Oscar Austin (DDG-79)

Flight IIA of the Arleigh Burke class, authorized in fiscal year 1994, was a redesign that incorporated alterations for littoral (coastal) warfare on a hull lengthened by six feet over Flight I and II ships.
Lead ship for Flight IIA was Oscar Austin, laid down in 1997 and the first destroyer commissioned in 2000. Her main recognition feature was an enclosure for side-by-side Flight IIAhelecopter hangars aft; her flight deck was also enlarged. Systems enhancements included organic minehunting and area theater ballistic missile defense.
Other alterations followed. Winston S. Churchill, commissioned in 2001, was first to mount a new 5-inch/62 cal. gun. McCampbell deleted the CIWS in favor of the (NATO) Evolved Sea Sparrow missile. Mustin introduced a funnel that deleted the visible caps, further reducing her radar signature.
Flight IIA is planned to include 34 ships—more than half the Arleigh Burkes—with construction equally divided between Bath Iron Works and Northrup Grumman’s Ingalls Operations at Pascagoula, Mississippi.

DAMAGE DURING CONSTRUCTION
On 29 August 2005, Hurricane Katrina struck Pascagoula, holing and partially flooding Kidd, which had been launched the previous December. She did not commission until 2½ years after her christening.
Construction of Ingalls’ next ship, Truxtun, was delayed by a fire on 20 May 2006. She christened just over 2 years after her keel was laid.

FUTURE CONSTRUCTION
Construction of the Arleigh Burke class is planned to continue until 2011, when Bath is scheduled to deliver the 62nd ship of the class, Michael Murphy.
