Looking southerly from the direction of of Savo Island toward Guadalcanal’s Tassafaronga coast along Fletcher’s approximate torpedo firing bearing. The van destroyers’ torpedoes missed. In return, however, despite being pinned against the shore, the Japanese destroyers torpedoed all four American heavy cruisers present, sinking Northampton, whose survivors were rescued by Fletcher and Drayton.
